- 031. Aggregate Dumprock Definition: Dumprock (also called dump rock or boulder aggregate) refers to large, angular stones or rock fragments typically ranging from about 75 mm up to 300 mm or more in size. Characteristics: • Size: Much larger than standard aggregate or gravel. • Shape: Angular and irregular, as it’s usually produced from quarry blasting or mechanical breaking rather than natural weathering. • Composition: Often made from hard rock such as granite, dolerite, or limestone. • Source: Directly from quarries — not screened or washed to fine specifications. Common Uses: • Retaining walls and gabion baskets. • Erosion control and slope stabilization. • Landscaping (decorative rock). • Heavy-duty drainage or protection around culverts and riverbanks. 2. Gravel Definition: Gravel is a naturally occurring or crushed material composed of smaller rock fragments, usually 2 mm to 75 mm in diameter. Characteristics: • Size: Smaller than dumprock; varies from fine pea gravel to coarse crushed stone. • Shape: Can be rounded (from river or glacial deposits) or angular (from crushed rock). • Composition: Typically contains a mix of rock types such as quartz, limestone, basalt, etc. • Source: Can be natural (river gravel) or manufactured (crushed aggregate). Common Uses: • Concrete production and asphalt mixes. • Base material for roads, driveways, and drainage layers. • Landscaping and pathways. 3. Connection Between Dumprock and Gravel Both dumprock and gravel are types of aggregate, which is the general term for all granular materials used in construction. In summary: • Dumprock = large, rough, structural aggregate. • Gravel = smaller, often processed aggregate used in mixes and base layers. • Connection: Both are part of the aggregate continuum — dumprock may eventually become gravel through crushing and grading
